Worth the upgrade cost
My new bike came with an external shimano bb. 2 weeks in it started to creek. Instead of paying my LBS $120 to replace one of these every year or so, I paid $85, and the replacement bearings are $40/pair. If you're going to keep your bike for a while, this is the way to go. Makes bearing replacement very easy and cheap. No more week+ waits to get a bb replaced
