  • Grover champion friction tuners

Got a banjo for Christmas. Thought it would improve the functionality as the tuners that came on it were lacking. Thought these tuners would be easy to install as all the reviews said they basically just drop in. I had to basically thin the thickness of the hole in order to get the two parts to match up. Ended up spending over an hour on each tuner to get them in. I do regret installing them and feel any of the other junk tuners awash on eBay would have made a cleaner install but after I started digging and thinning to put in the first of what I really believed would just need minor modification to install, I was committed . What really gets me is that all this could have been avoided if the carton simply stated,”good on headstocks with thickness up to XX.XXmm .”

  • These much too short for most banjos! Be sure to measure your instrument carefully!

I ordered this set for an older Supertone (Sears, 1900) open back banjo. Most all these old ones were around 5/8" thick at the headstock, including a veneer overlay. In fact most banjos I've ever seen have the thicker headstock, and there seems to be something screwy here with these pegs. The maximum thickness that you can mount them on is 1/2", or about 13mm, so that rules out most banjos. I've worked on banjo setup and repair for decades and this new version of the old Champion Friction pegs are for very thin pegheads apparently, so be sure you measure your instrument before you buy these. There is another version of these out there that fits thicker headstocks, but they are pricey and very hard to find and don't come with the 5th peg, so you'll need to buy a matching 5th separately. Bummer. I guess if you want to go back with friction pegs for a vintage banjo in order to keep it truly authentic, you have few options these days.

  • Not for full thickness headstocks.

The shafts are very short and the screw is even shorter. I used them on a no name Asian banjo and had to inset the ferrules on the back of the headstock so the shafts would mate up. Needed longer screws too.

  • The ones I ordered were not the black tuners, but the pearloid buttons. Very nice but pricey!

  • Good value. Great for nylon strings

Great affordable pegs for nylon or gut string banjos. I wouldn’t recommend for steel strings, but they’ll probably last forever with gut strings.
