This is a key part of US animation history, and although this is "Betty Boop The Essential Collection Volume 2" it starts out with the very first Betty appearance in Dizzy Dishes, 1930, where she is a rather chubby French poodle that was created to be Bimbo (the dog's) love interest. Very quickly, she becomes human, takes on far more of a Helen Kane look and sound (which would lead to a lawsuit) and takes on the star roles, morphed into a sex symbol in part to Grim Natwick's work. By the latter 1932 to 1934 cartoons, she has her own introduction at the beginning with a background vocal as "the queen of the animated screen". These particular prints have the post-1955 UM&M logo for TV syndication, which is sort of a fun anomaly, as sometimes the Paramount logos are also shown as well. Worth watching several times for the subtle insertions of Jewish humor as the animators apparently inserted the occasional Hebrew stereotypes or language references for fun (it's rumored the same animators would also moonlight at Van Beuren studios, in who's cartoons from the same time you can see the same thing). Also fun to watch for the occasional inserting of female form detail or flashes of underwear, as this is all pre-code. Sometimes the plots are really thin, but the image quality is excellent, not over-copied and well-used prints, and the sound quality is usually good. This is a good deal if you're into Americana, early animation, but may not be the Betty you're expecting if your exposure comes from later work. In all, I'm glad I watched this and will probably watch once a year to see if I can spot more Read full review

I love these films and have had lots of different copies over the years, with this series the films look really great. There are things in the backgrounds I never noticed before. And of course pre-code Betty Boop is some of the best animation ever produced, ever. Great DVD, I'm getting the whole series.
