I already own this movie, but bought it for my friend's Hanukkah gift, he wanted it because he thought it is hilarious. It's a light hearted turn for typically dark, brooding actor Edward Norton as a Catholic priest, a not so embarassing and foolish role for Ben Stiller who plays a new age Rabbi and Jenna Elfman glows as their childhood friend turned romanic interest. It may not be Oscar worthy, but it's a feel good movie that will make you laugh and smile. The plot says it alone: Two best friends follow their own respective paths into their faiths, one becomes a Catholic priest and the other a Rabbi. All goes smoothly until their beguiling childhood playmate reenters their lives and creates a not so perfect triangle. Definately a good buy for someone wanting a nice movie they can watch over and over again.Read full review
I'm always interested in expanding my DVD collection; I was attempting to add every film in which Edward Norton has appeared. I wasn't sure I could find "Keeping the Faith" at a local Best Buy or other retail store; sometimes titles aren't currently available; you have to wait until they are re-released, or in some cases, released on DVD for the first time. That's why E-bay is so terrific; you can basically find whatever it is you're looking for. Although this DVD was used, I knew that going in, and fortunately it's gently used; viewed only once or twice by it's previous owner.....so the disc is in great shape and adding it to my collection made me very happy.
Great stars, great premise, barely tolerable to watch. The thing was poorly told, perhaps bad writing, perhaps not the right actors for the roles. I mean if you've seen Fight Club, it's hard to imagine NORTON as a wholesome priest. So much so, that he comes off goofy. He plays off Stillers, hootchy cootchy rabbi... which well, doesn't work in my opinion. I think that perhaps NORTON the director, should have worked with some "no names", younger actors, and perhaps might have made a more personal empowering film. If you need to kill a couple of hours then see it, but otherwise you can skip it. **If you found this information at all helpful, please take a moment to select the "yes" button below. I saw this movie on cable several years ago and feel in love with it... Although one of Ben Stiller's lesser known movies I think it is one of his better performances. He does a great job of portraying a young progressive rabbi and Norton does a good job as his best friend a young priest.. It also features a good performance by the great Ann Bancroft... It is one of those feel good movies that I watch several times a year.
Three friends reunite after many years and work out their relationships with God and each other. Ben Stiller, Jenna Elfman, and Edward Norton display real chemistry in this very well-written adult comedy. With Anne Bancroft and a bunch of character actors you'll recognize right away. There's also a surprise cameo.
