By far, Jean Edward Smith has produced THE significant work on the defining Supreme Court Chief Justice in American History. Not only does the author provide the story of his family, founding principles, fight in the Revolution, friendship with Washington, Federalist politics, feud with Jefferson, and framework for the Supreme Court, Smith provides a plethora of "Jeopardy worthy" trivia facts that are neat (i.e. Marshall had an interesting piece to do with the cracking of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia). By far, the power of this work rests in the details. This tome is not for the faint of heart or those that seek a short and basic biography. The book has 500 plus pages of text on Marshall and more than 200 pages of research citations. Smith clearly did his homework in preparing this outstanding and award-winning work. I believe the strength of the work is in those details but can be evidenced even further with the in-depth analysis of the major cases under Marshall's responsibility. The author incorporates citations from the Court's opinions with just the right balance between legalese and layman's terms. You do not need a legal background to be able to understand these cases; and that fact, I believe, is the skill of Smith's prose. This book abounds with lessons of leadership that would benefit anyone's time to read and review. I highly recommend it for any reader, but especially those with a bent towards the law. In fact, I would require this book as reading in any Constitutional Law course.Read full review
