.38 Special Speedloader - It Works.....

First I will say that I have never tried any other speedloaders so I have nothing to compare to, however, after a short "learning curve" (and a little practice) I have confidence in the product. The main issue is locking the rounds in. After they are locked in properly, they stay in and release easily. I have two that I carry with my S&W. Now I need to find a realistic way to carry them concealed where I can still readily get to them. For concealment, a "clip" ("magazine" to make hardcore range instructors happy) is easier to conceal but my Hi Power 9 is not so easy to hide. In short, good product and value in my opinion.

  • Top critical review

    Does not work.

Will not work with J frame S&W. With grips removed on Model 36 and 37, loader only allows the tips of the cartridges to enter the cylinder. With this loader it must enter completely to release the cartridges, thus is unusable. Appears to be too large in diameter as well as not having the correct spacing to match the S&W cylinder. The detailed description specifically listed models 36 and 37 as compatable. Not so.

  • Very good speedloader but you need to use the right grips.

These are very good speedloaders but you have to use the correct grips for them to work. I have a J-frame Smith & Wesson .357 magnum and it had factory grips. I found out that just about all factory grips won't allow enough room to use speedloaders. I changed the factory ones with Hogue grips and now everything works great! This is just an FYI for those, like me, who didn't know the grips needed to be changed. A small edit to the review is that I had to modify the Hogue grips to allow enough clearance for speed loaders. Choose your grips well and make sure they are the kind that can be sanded down. I used a Dremel tool with the round sandpaper attachment and it looks like the factory made it that way!

  • Just barely on a J frame

It 'carefully' fits a Smith 442, but requires some wiggle. I dremeled the left grip slightly (about 1/16"), so it drops in and releases without any trouble, and gained a thumb rest (rt handed) that works really well aiding control. But if you want to keep your grips pristine, don't use this speedloader, use a bianchi speedstrip type (and don't practice with your revolver, either). Pros: Narrow profile, Safariland quality, speedy reload; Cons: needs to have L grip relieved slightly to operate easily and quickly.

  • Speed loader

I ordered this speed loader because I thought it would be faster to use than other speed loaders where you have to turn the knob to release the cartridges. I have two Smith and Wesson J Frame revolvers, a model 60 and a concealed hammer lightweight. The model 60 has the stock grips and the lightweight has Chrimson Trace Laser grips. The Safariland Speedloaders will not work with either gun. HKS Speedloaders work fine. Perhaps if you ground the grips down the Safariland loaders might work, you can see the loader is cocked and won't enter the cylinder.

  • Not for the Ruger LCR

Work great in my J Frame S&W, Charter Arms Undercover, and even the Ruger SP101. BUT....they won't work with the Ruger LCR without hogging out the grips a lot. I wanted to use them with the LCR, but now i'll just swap the S&W's HKS speedloaders with the LCR's Safariland speedloaders. I'll never understand WHY Grip Manufacturers don't make their grips compatable with the standard speedloaders like HKS and Safariland....but they don't! If you are willing to modify your grips you could use the Safariland speedloader with the LCR it's the right size for the LCR's cylinder. So if you can get past the grips it will work with the LCR.

  • No so hot

I had the speed loader for the 6 shot K frame and it was good, but this J Frame loader is a fail. The knob is so small that you can't get get a grip on it to lock in the rounds. When I finally got one out of the two loaders I ordered to lock after fooling with it, it wouldn't release when loading. I like the design, but this one just doesn't work. Chalk it up to lesson learned.

  • Lightweight and allows for a quick reload.

This speed loader would be wonderful for a larger frame S&W. But for a S&W model 638 (J frame) the cylinder doesn't swing out far enough to allow the loader to be inserted far enough to release the loads.

  • it does the job better than the HKS

but the quality of the loader just feels cheap... i think it can be made of better material but thats probably gona drive cost up.... in comparison, this loader is easier to use than the hks. would have given the full 5 stars if it was made with better material. overall, its a decent product for the money.

  • Very easy to load 5 rounds into Smith & Wesson "J" frame revolver.

As described this Speedloader is very easy to use at a very excellent price. It works great to quickly load 5 rounds into my Smith & Wesson "J" frame 38 special Body Guard revolver.
