This is the grandaddy of them all, in my opinion. The extensive amounts of hidden items, weapons, armor, and spells are a treasure hunter's dream. For those of you who like fantasy RPG, you know what I am talking about. Those that don't or are unaware, listen up: You get to control and develop your team of characters in turn-based, and progressively more difficult stage battles all along the Valeria map, following a very intense and interesting storyline, which allows you to follow one of three main paths, and allows for side quests, including the highly addictive and very fun H*ll Gate sidequest, which allows you to enter the gates of H*ll and travel through 100 levels filled with demons, ogres, gorgons, and other creatures from the netherworld, ultimately leading to the very bottom of H*ll gate, where you fight the master of necromancy and his summoned creatures, surrounded by fire and brimstone. But that's not even the end of the game! You should seek to find all the hidden characters, seek to create at least one Lich (master undead wizard character) and an angel knight or two. The side quests, treasure hunts, and storylines, as well as the important characters make playing the game even more exciting than beating it. Which means you want to play it again. Negatives? Training mode can get tedious. Look for a certain online strategy guide (easy to find) for tips on how to counter/skip this part. The music could have been better done. So? Mute the game and play your favorite music as the background theme. It's not even that bad until you have heard it for a while. And there are a few typos in the game itself, which is odd considering how great the game is. The graphics aren't exactly amazing, but this game isn't about pretty pictures any more than any good strategy game is. You want pretty? They have some nice pretty games on the computer with less than half the appeal of this game, and zero of the replay value. Highly addictive, easy to learn, fun for beginners, challenging for masters, and this game does provide hundreds of hours of play (if you aren't about rushing straight to the end), followed by hundreds more in replay. Do yourself a favor, try this game out. If you like Final Fantasy Games, or are familiar with any of the Tactics Ogre series, or you like battling, or you like strategy/tactics, then try this game out. It's like chess, only with wizards and goblins and archers and variable height and terrain, with magic spells and hidden weapons and an excellent storyline. In other words, it's not like chess at all, except you have pieces you can move around. LOL. You will find this game on eBay, because it's rare and dated. But worth at least $50, in my humble opinion. You will thank me after you have battled your way to the bottom of H*ll Gate! Don't expect FFX graphics, just superior gameplay. More addictive than any game I've ever played, and it is a cult classic/ fan favorite, if not a widely known big time hit. Be sure to explore all the stroy routes, Law, Neutral, and Chaotic. That's 3 times the gameplay, and it gives you a chance to start over and build an even better attack team the second and third times. Final quest? Figure out how to create godlike characters using a combination of undead/holy magic, and a hidden Dragon spell... That's all the hints you will get from me. Get this game, will ya?Read full review
Tactics Ogre is a fine turn-based strategy game that has the player moving a team of eight charactes or so across an isometric battle field in skirmishes against enemy squads. This game is DEEP, much deeper than you standard RPG, and Tactics Ogre is also a lot more exciting than your standard strategy game, it really is an exemplary amalgam of the two genres. Positioning is the key on the battlefield; you'll want to get tot he high ground when possible, flank your enemy, and take out their most powerful fighters before they do the same to you. The physics system is nice, you'll do extra damage from higher ground, or from behind or to the side of an enemy. There are tons oof different classes of characters, and you'll want to try out most of them to maximize your fighting potential. As things progress, magic becomes increasinly important, your wizards will be the core of your attack in the latter parts of the game. You'll recruit characters to fight on your team as you go along, in fact, you can ask an enemy to join you in the middle of battle, it's not a bd idea to use this feature frequently, i recruited some tough lizardmen early on who served as my frontal defense for the better part of the game. The battles are nearly endless in this game, it's a long one. And there is one MASSIVE problem with the game's length - if you really want to be effective, you'll need to spend TONS of time leveling your characters up, it really gets tedious, and you're not really learning anything while you "train" them, it's just busy work, in true RPG form. I kid you not, yoiu spend almost twice as much time in training as you do in battle, this sort of artificial game lengthening is unfortunate at best (and it's become commonplace in modern games). If you DON'T spend lots of time, leveling up, you will lose charactes in battles, which is DEVASTATING, once they're gone, they're gone, and so are the twenty hours of work you put into them. This is a fantastic game crippled by one unfortunate flaw, if you've got time to kill, Tactics Ogre might be your beast of choice.Read full review
Its spellbinding, its terrific, its got me wanting more. Its like warm soup on a rainy day. I guess what I’m getting at people is that Tactics ogre can take you to a place , where you are king or at least trying to be. You are in charge of your own Family of Battle creatures. Yeah, you recruit all kinds of amazing creatures from all over the land. You can name them, train them suite them up and place them in your battle formation. If your not good to them watch out cause they show you there anger, and even quit your team if they are neglected enough. Training is awesome, in no other game have I ever been able to set up my own 2 teams of humans and beast to battle it out in training where you can develop individual characters strengths and skills. Set it to AI V.s. AI Or battle a friend. I just took the main character and let him dook it out with the winged man Cannapus and my elite 2 lizard man archers. It was a fun to just sit back and watch. The gameplay is fresh, plenty of battles and plenty of bosses. There is even a secret dungeon called hells gate, in wich you travel 100 levels down battling pure evil. This is the course you must take to get the games coolest weapons. Speaking of weapons, you have a choice of all types, in which some have abilities of there own to shoot out every or create havoc. The land is so diverse and depending on your creatures strengths you will either gain power or loose it. Like fire drack v.s some kind ice monster in a volcano, you know who wins.. Its obvious the developers put 1000’s of hours developing this game, it’s a instant classic just play and see for yourself. With over 7 different endings and over a 100 different monsters and classes in witch you control their destinies you will love getting envolved with this game. Now you’d better start recruiting sonny you’ll need a fine army and plenty of weapons, Haha your at war..Read full review
if you like RPG's and war, this is your game. It is well worth the price it is at. But to let you know a secret, i got the game for free through ROM downloads. But the game has everything at its best except video and audio. If they ever come out with another game very similar to it, I can see it being one of the best RPG's ever. They don't even need to change the setup, just maybe a slightly different storyline, mybe a few more charachters and impressive video and audio...it'll blow other games away.
I believe this game is the most influential game in classic games. Nowadays, there are too many luxurious 3D games, which quality of back grounds are merely superficiel. But this classic game reminds us the old days. Exactry, those days, graphic and music techniques were not matured but basic concepts such as game system, story and back grounds were carefully created. Please allow me to say that Tactics Ogre is one of Master Piece of family computers.
