Satchidananda provides a detailed explanation of each* Sutra. This is very helpful, because without an understand of the terms used, which includes an understanding of the historical times in which those terms were used, then the Sutras generally don't make much sense. This book, along with the long version of Yogananda's explanation of the Gita (The Bhagavad Gita: According to Paramhansa Yogananda According to Paramhansa Yogananda) are an excellent explanation of the purpose of Yoga and some important points on doing it. * Satchidananda translates some Sutras but does not comment on them (e.g., obvious one), but I think it would have been better to comment on all of them.
