From the factory this Shay has problems. It is beautiful as a shelf decoration, and very entertaining if it runs. I have 3, and the same problem exists with all three. I purchased this one in hopes that it was newer and the problems had been corrected. Wrong! The problem is with the drive line. The loco is propelled by way of an outside driveline just as the prototype is. The problem is with the gears on the driveshaft that mate with gears on the wheels. The diveshaft gears are plastic, and they are prone to break into, or slip off of their proper location on the shaft, become stripped on the shaft, or in one case, fall off and be lost. When this situation happens, the shaft gears no longer mate with the gear on the wheel, and that wheel becomes simply freewheeling. When enough of the wheels loose gearing the locomotive won't pull, and if all wheels loose gear mating it simply sits there with the driveline spinning and no movement. This locomotive is 'Out of Production' and replacement truck parts are SOLD OUT! Northwest Shortline makes replacement gears made of metal, and I now am waiting for a shipment of these gears in order to repair all three of my currently derelict 3 Truck Shays. Unless the the engine has been properly regeared in some fashion, it will make a very nice conversation shelf decoration.
