On second viewing, not the intriguing character study it should have been
THE EFFICIENCY EXPERT is a modestly budgeted dramedy from Australia that suffers from characterizations that never move beyond initial impressions. Even Anthony Hopkins's accountant is ultimately unconvincing in his presumptive transformation from economic hit man to charitable reform-minded financer. The usual cliches about small businesses being more sensitive to personnel needs are trotted out while the calamitous ruin caused by their eccentricities and procrastinations is papered over. No business operating like the one highlighted here could stay solvent for even one year, let alone a generation or more. While balance between family commitments and skillful timely work should be the goal of any modern company, the imbalance featured in this film is no utopian solution and is only entertaining in an awkwardly half-baked way.
Better to skip this one unless you have oodles of time and a low standard for credible film acting. The dvd itself arrived intact and was reasonably viewable.
