At first, I wondered if I should have bought a gps which had voice recognition. The nuvi 42 LM does not have it. However, for my use, it was not worth the extra money. I am completely happy to enter an address into "favorites" manually. Weaknesses -- maybe there is a solution I have not found: 1) As you arrive at a "go to" destination, I wish the house address appeared on the screen. In that way you would not have to remember if the house 100 ft. away on the right or left is the house you want. 2) When I enter a new address into "Favorites", I have to backtrack (arrow back) and start over in order to put in the phone number via "edit". I'm not sure if that is my problem or a Garmin nuvi 42 LM issue. Otherwise, I really like this gps. One aspect I really like is when I am at an address, I can see if there are other addresses in the immediate area listed in my "Favorites".Read full review

Pros: Good backup for phone, easy to see, easy to hear, speed indicator is nice Cons: Can't find the satellite - takes forever to start up a lot, does not recalculate quickly as in past versions.

This GPS is a typical Garmin product, meaning its one of the better models in the GPS marketplace. It's features and use is intuitive for the most part. The signal is acquired reasonably quickly, the screen is clear and bright and it has a good range of features and options.

This is a great unit for the price, when taken out of the box, and registered it updated to the most current maps which was nice, I've taken it on 3 out of town trips since purchasing and so far so good, not sure if it's a setting but seems to like to bring me to my destination with it on my right.....it's had me go past places and then come back to where it's a right turn to final destination....could just be me, but hasn't taken me out of the way at all, all in all does what I would like it to do. Would recommend if someone was looking for an entry level GPS.
I bought this unit as a replacement for one that was stolen from my vehicle. This is a refurbished unit. The display is excellent, very easy to see and read. The main problem is inputting the street name , city, zip code etc. I have to push the on screen letters at least 5 times each in order for the info to actually register on the screen. Very frustrating. Also the first time I actually used it to find an address in Orlando it took me to an address that had previously been saved IN NEW JERSEY !!! Not likely I'll be purchasing another refurbished unit anytime soon. PS...no one in our house has Ever been to New Jersey !!!
I have used 3 or 4 Garmins and I like this one best of all. I don't like to spend too much for my GPS and make a game of getting all I can for the least I can spend. The 42LM fits this description.

Purchased this to replace a 42LM with a cracked screen. Great little unit, I particularly like the split screen display. Voice is a little irritating - too "mechanical." But great value for the money.

Great Price, user friendly and the screen is the perfect size. I wish it had a pouch to carry around but is definitely a great buy. The software for the computer was easy to install and to use as well. My wife is very happy with her gift!! :)
