White Mountain Ice Cream Maker W/UPDATE REVIEW
I looked over a lot of reviews on the White Mountain finding more negative than positive. Some said it wouldn't crank, some said it was hard to crank and that they found metal shavings in their ice cream. Some said that when you cranked the handle the gear housing would jump out of the bucket brackets so they had to stand on top of it while someone else cranked it. Some said the crank shaft had slack in it and the gears would grind. Some said theirs worked Great! I was certainly uncertain if I should make a purchase but decided to go ahead. I received mine by UPS the other day and after looking over the box for any obvious shipping damage took delivery. I opened the box which I'll mention it is shipped in the original retail box taped with clear tape to keep it closed. It was apparently packaged well enough to survive shipping as all the parts where cardboard separated in the box. It came with a instruction manual that has ice cream recipes in it also. I decided first to assemble it following the instructions and do some cranking on it to see if any of the above problems others had mentioned would occur. After cranking on it for quite a while without experiencing any of the above mentioned problems I have come to the conclusion that there must be a awful lot of drunk people making ice cream! Just Kidding although the thought did cross my mind. As I said, I didn't experience slack in the gear shaft, grinding sounds, locking gears, gear housing jumping out of the bucket brackets or any metal shavings in the canister and if you have those problems maybe you should check on how you put it together. It is noisy when cranking as should be expected. My advice is take time to read the instructions. *******UPDATE****** After using the first time all was ok, I do suggest going ahead and taking the gears apart and cleaning the cheap lubricant off the gears as it heats up and melts after cranking long enough to make your ice cream. After I cleaned the gears off I decided not to use lubricant due the gears are cast parts which are loose enough. Its not like this thing is used at a high RPM its just hand cranked so there's no real heat build up. You do have to hold the Gear Housing turned to keep it locked into the Brackets on the Bucket as you turn the Crank which gets a little harder as the Ice Cream hardens. For example my seven year old granddaughter had no problem cranking it until we got to the end of the process which I just held it in place as she cranked. The Bucket has what looks to me as a glued or sealed Bucket Bottom but I still got a cardboard box and placed a plastic garbage bag in it pulling the extra around and Duct Taped it to the bottom of the box just in case I had any salt or ice escape when pouring into the bucket which I did. We also made the Ice Cream in the house and you do not want the melted ice salt mixture getting on your floors or carpet. I'm very pleased to say, The Ice Cream turns out GREAT!! We made the 6QT mixture and used a store bought ice cream tub we kept to freeze the extra. The instructions read that your ice cream will keep for 30 days!
