Outstanding narrative history of the United States from Roosevelt's first inaugural to Nixon's second. Manchester is a master story teller and reading his works is like reading an outstandingly well written novel. I would highly recommend this book as well as his definitive Churchill biography, three volumes, or any of his lesser know works like "Goodbye Darkness" or "A World Lit only by Fire", the first a personal account of his experiences as a soldier in the Pacific Theater during WWII and the second, a history of the world at the time of Magellan.

Taylor Branch presents a well researched documentary of the early days of the civil rights movement. This work fills in many of the blanks in the personal development of Martin Luther King's contemporaries and predecessors in the continuing struggle to realize the promise of the Founders of the United States that "all men are created equal." Especially interesting was that "upward movement" of black American males was available mostly within the churches and religious organizations. Highly recommended reading for history buffs and those who just want to know the people and issues in more detail.
