Does the job, but not truly double-ended
Overall, I'd say this is a good product, but for a few caveats, and one thing the buyer ought to know before buying it. The principal of this pencil extender is the same as many others, you insert the end of a short pencil in it and you can continue to easily grip the pencil until it's just about gone. If you use wooden artist's pencils, this can save you about a third of each pencil, as I find it hard to draw if the pencil isn't resting in the crook of my thumb. The mechanism is a simple metal sleeve and collar, which holds the pencil securely. The construction is fairly sturdy, and the plastic center feels heavy, not cheap, it has more weight than a pencil of the same size, which is comfortable for me. The holder is symmetrical, so you don't favor one position when you're drawing, you can spin it to get to the sharper part of the point easily, without favoring one edge or being bothered by a pocket clip. The sleeve and collar are not knurled or textured, so at the end of your pencil, you will be holding smooth metal instead of painted wood or a textured grip, like some holders. The main issue I have with this design is that, while it is a double ended tool, the receptacles are not the same size. One size is a standard pencil size, which takes any normal school pencil, drawing pencil, or colored pencil, hexagonal or round, while the other side is quite a bit wider, and after digging through two drawers of collected pencils of the centuries, I could not find one pencil that fit in the wider end. I found an old kindergarten-style pencil with a thick width, but it was actually too wide for this holder. I don't know what the larger side can be used for. I expected to be able to use this with either a hard lead on the front and a softer lead on the back, or a blue lead on the front and a red lead on the back, but this pencil will not fulfill this function if you have matching pencils. You could obviously widen your pencil with tape to make it fit the wide end, but then you lose some of your pencil to the tape, which almost defeats the purpose of the extender. At the price, though, it's easy to buy a few and only use the smaller side. I did find a medium tortillon which fits the wider side, so perhaps I can use one side to draw and one side to smudge and shade. I still say this is a good product and does the task for which it is designed, though next time, I may just buy the one-sided version.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
