corny but gorgeous
I wanted to see this movie after being reminded of it by some clips of the dancing on YouTube. I hadn’t seen it since its theatrical release in the late 70s. It was nowhere to be found in any streaming version, so I sprang for the DVD, and it was worth it. On the negative side, it’s a pretty predictable script, with uninspired dialogue, a silly climactic fight and a too-tidy resolution. And the dancers are all pretty bad actors, except for the marvelous Danilova. However, there is real truth about life choices at the core of the story. Some of the lead performances are outstanding, especially Shirley MacLaine and Anne Bancroft, who rise above the cliches of the script and dialogue and communicate real depth and feeling wordlessly. And the dancing is out of this world: nothing compares to Barishnikov in his gorgeous prime. I would have preferred a more conventional viewpoint of the state to the strange into-the-lights camera angles which, after the inital novelty, start to interfere with appreciating the dance. But what’s there is still amazing, and the glimpses of rehearsals are even better.

If you enjoyed The Turning Point, you'll enjoy this DVD
I was very happy to find this 1977 film. It's new, but not aa "original" DVD. It skipped just a bit in 2 places, but very good quality other than that. If you're searching for The Turning Point, I suggest that you order this one. I searched many places, and it's difficult to find.

Excellent movie - Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine rule!
The movie itself played well with only one pause near the beginning, however, I had to TURN the sound up on my system to MAX to have the sound at a level where I could hear it so the recording of soundtrack was not that great on this disk.

I would have given this a 5-star review (the movie itself deserves 5 stars, to be sure), but for the not-so-great video fidelity. It looks like someone made a video from a video from a video...rather fuzzy. BUT: better than not having this wonderful film at all!!! I just watch it without my glasses, and it's fine. :-)

Got what i wanted
Wanted to see early Shirley Maclaine. Thought she might be doing some ballet, but fouind out she was the mother of a young ballerina. Interesting picture and the print was good.

A wonder piece of work.
I have been wanting this movie for a very long time, but was not able to pay hundreds of dollars for it. So when I saw this movie at the price I paid... I was in shock. I HAD to get this movie. I must have watched it at least 10 times already. The actors are great, the music and dancing is even better. I LOVE this movie.
