Functional but plasticy
This is a nicely designed bookstand in a large size. It will hold double-size cookbooks and normal-sized hardbacks. The spring retainers are decently strong and easy to engage. Only small paperbacks will be undersized for the span of the springs. The variable angle back works well. My only negative comment is that it would be nice if the device did not attempt to replicate wood with synthetics. It is made from a wood fiberboard core (MDF) with a wood look-alike laminate surface similar to synthetic flooring. It looks pretty real until you examine it closely. I would prefer either real wood, or a synthetic that doesn't try to look like something else. That said, it works well. Only time will tell how it will stand up to use.
