The CTR-101 is a surprisingly good handheld recorder for recording music and voice. The speaker is easily overpowered upon playback but the unit has accessory plugs for earphones [external speaker can be hooked up this way] and mics. It wouldn't be satisfactory for high-quality listening needs, but, as mentioned, external speakers can be hooked up and the unit suddenly becomes quite good for that purpose. I have had several of these units and they outperform [for recording music] ALL other inexpensive recorders on the market - bar none! I use the CTR-101 to record songs that I sing and even more expensive digital recorders are no match for this unit. I have no idea who built these for Radio shack, but they did a great job! The quality of the recordings, when using proper distance from mics and amps, is excellent!Read full review

When new, these were the very best analog recorders for music and voice recording. However, as they age, the main tendency is for the volume circuit to fail...rendering the unit totally worthless. I have purchased over a dozen of these and had pretty good luck until recently...age and neglect takes a heavy toll on this type of equipment.

It is low quality made. I have been burned on three Radio Shacks Recorders. I will never purchase another one. They are cheap

Exactly what I ordered. A cassette tape record, voice activated.
