In recent years Taj Mahal, a gravel-voiced son of America and Jamaica whose love of his heritage saturates his singing and playing, has been described as a national treasure. This three-CD set contains reissues of his first albums, from when he appeared on the folk music scene in the late 1960s, with a few extra songs that perhaps didn't fit on the vinyl. Many of these fine versions of classic blues and reggae songs have become classics themselves, still played on blues shows. They are close to the Delta and island originals, though of course colored with Taj's own distinctive musicianship and style. His later albums include some of the same songs, aged like fine wine and enlivened by his lifelong subtle experimentation with tempos and inflections drawn from every stream of the African diaspora. Old fans will enjoy a reunion with an old friend. New fans can get to know the core that underlies Taj's later interpretations.Read full review
