  • Mehta excellent in his fifth New Year's Concert from Vienna

Mehta's formative years in Vienna paid off handsomely here, with performances of the requisite sparkle and freedom. It is not true that the Vienna Philharmonic plays these concerts, some of the works very familiar and some new to the series, with a collective approach that really needs no conductor. Boskovsky set the style in our ears, but every conductor since in the cavalcade of honored guests has placed his imprint on the music, for better or for less good. Mehta has been most definitely among the better in his five appearances. Among the twenty works performed, five are new to the concerts, all by members of the Strauss family, and there are two works by non-Strauss composers: Franz von Suppé and Danish composer Hans Christian Lumbye. The concert concludes with the usual encores: a shimmering An der schönen blauen Donau and a rousing Radetzky March with lots of enthusiastic audience participation. There is a lovely booklet with pictures of the opulent Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikvereins and helpful notes by Mehta and Clemens Hellsberg, a first violinist of the orchestra at the time. As has been the case for many years, the booklet is prepared before the concert to facilitate early availability afterward, so there are no timings given.
