Fun good-bye party for Vincent Price on the eve of retirement.
"Madhouse" gives you, in effect, a good-bye party for Vincent Price. The studio was grooming Robert Quarry to replace Vinnie as their principal horror star, much like the situation in the screenplay in which a young woman is being introduced into the franchise of Vinnie's character's long-running film series "Dr. Death." The on-screen antagonism between Quarry and Price was reportedly quite real. Yet while these unhappy off-screen events are paralleled in the story, Peter Cushing's character arranges a retrospective of the career of his friend, played by Price. We are therefore treated to clips from a range of Vinnie's actual films, into some of which shots of Price as Dr. Death have been inserted. This is quite fun, especially for people who have seen many of Vincent's movies, as you get to try identifying them all. This also allows for brief cameos by Basil Rathbone and Boris Karloff in these interpolated clips, even though both had passed on before "Madhouse" was made. There is even a recording of a song Price sang in an earlier show. Production values are quite good, the performances strong and some clever moments. To my eye this production seems more an amusing game and celebration of the career of Vincent Price than a movie meant to frighten. I found it delightful nd will watch it again, soon.
