A very entertaining vintage show from Great Britain, starring one of their premier character actresses, Patricia Routledge. In the first episode, she wakes up to face the fact that she is 60, and wants to do more than just being an OAP (Old Age Pensioner). A series of events brings her across the path of a cute young punk, in who she sees potential. She takes him on as her assistant, and they become private investigators. Light-hearted and warm, this series is lovely. Well-written and sympathetic. Good feeling reigns throughout, Interesting, well-rounded characters, and typically highest-quality acting. On the expensive side, but well worth it.

We are enjoying this series immensely. It is well cast and by the third season, the characters have developed into amusing and respectable professionals. No one does it better than the Brits when it comes to comedy. I wish the series was subtitled but appreciate the closed captioning (although the text is smaller than desired). It does not diminish my joy in watching these great actors.

Patricia Routledge (Keeping Up Appearances) is the detective; she’s good at solving puzzles of the human kind, and her compassion usually guides her. Sometimes she is led “down the garden path” by someone unscrupulous, but with her trusty assistant and occasional other help, she gets to the truth, no matter how muddy everyone gets! These are not mind-benders, they are people with business or family problems. And although the detective agency “does not do divorces or murder,” they seem to happen anyway. Hetty and her husband are a sweet couple (though not perfect), and Hetty’s very young assistant is a delightful help and distraction who becomes important to the agency, and the empty-nest pair.

We just love the series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. Very clever writers. We love the way that Hetty (and her partner) is able to figure out who the criminals are and then make sure they get their justice due. Well done and magnificently scripted.
