The Blu-ray disc of 2010 is worth getting for the special effect sequences (done optically "in the camera") which are absolutely spectacular on a large screen. When I first saw this picture in the cinema, I remember experiencing sensations of vertigo along with John Lithgow's character in the spacewalk scene. The outer space sequences with the space ships and Jupiter and its moons look great. Unfortunately, the regular live action sequences are marred by noticeable graininess in many scenes. It was standard practice in the day to shoot special effects in a large format process like Vistavision, so that is probably why the effects scenes look so good. It is too bad the film makers did not shoot in 65mm as was done with 2001, or that the 35mm film was not cleaned up any better. There is a vintage "making of" featurette that is interesting but too brief. Except for Dana Elcar, who is not believable as the Russian/Soviet space program head, the cast is very good. The film makers had the good sense to cast real Russians or actors of Russian descent (Helen Mirren) for the Soviet cosmonauts. Look for Mary Jo Deschanel of the now famous Deschanel acting family as David Bowman's ex wife. Also look for brief cameos from Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick (sort of). Now for my nitpicks. I wish they would have included the side plot of the American expedition that was in the novel. The musical soundtrack is mostly electronic, which may have been a good idea at the time, but now the use of synthesizers screams "1980's". The "Also Sprach Zarathustra" musical excerpt (performers uncredited) sounds different than the one Kubrick used and is not nearly as good. The depiction of computers, monitors, and TV's on earth looks very dated now. It looks as if the film makers just used electronic devices of the day without much of an attempt to "futurize" them. Syd Mead's designs for the Soviet space ship still look quite good though. However, the analog VOMs (Volt Ohm Meters) strapped to the astronauts' chests as they come out of hibernation is laughable. The Soviets were known for their conservative use of electronics in their space program, but 1960's technology in 2010, come on! Overall, some disappointments, but if you view this film on its own and not try to compare it to the original, it's an excellent science fiction filmRead full review
I'm glad this Blu-ray finally came out - the DVD was great but wasn't enhanced for widescreen. With the Blu-ray, not only do you get both the film and the previously released documentary (featuring my academy-award winning makeup buddy, Michael Westmore) but it's also enhanced for widescreen. The ONLY drawback - it doesn't have the mesmerizing animated menu that the DVD had. Straight to the movie!

Much better than the previous although Arthur C. Clarke masterpiece. Awesome deal for a brand new sealed Blu ray movie. Movie played flawlessly. Awesome inspiring and mind blowing for its era.

The sequel the the groundbreaking 2001: A Space Odyssey, this movie picks up just a few years later when things begin happening around a strange monolith found on the moon. Then things start happening around the derelict ship from the original movie still parked near the original and much larger monolith still there. It seems only another mission can find out what really happened to the ship, its crew, and HAL. Well written and filmed, as well as well acted and directed, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. Having it in HD and with 5.1 Dolby is wonderful! The conversion to HD is well done with only a bit of wobble on steady shots, but otherwise nearly flawless. Seeing the inside and out of Discovery in HD took my breath away! And HAL's reflective eyes are that much creepier. Casting was well done, and effects were awesome for their day and come over on HD very well.Read full review
