I mainly got this set for the map & book about the Trojan Reach, which otherwise was this gaping hole in the Traveller universe - which can only be filled by this set. That's unfortunate, since the set is mighty spendy. BUT, it's also very good. The sector book is actually half-filled with recaps of the Aslan, but the remainder actually gives a basic description of more planets than most material. There is an entire book devoted to just ships, which is always a Win. Then, there's the actual campaign book. The whole concept of the set is not only is it okay to be pirates, you're EXPECTED to be. That should make a lot of players happy. The PC ship is awesome, too! The three books are all nice hardbound, and the giant map matches the rest of the current offerings.

The Pirates of Drinax is a pretty stunning piece of work. It comprises a complete region for Traveller (or any sci-fi RPG) campaign, and goes far beyond the Sector maps and basic scenarios. Instead, the authors have created a grand scenario made up of multiple adventures, each having a bearing on the campaign. Even if you don’t use the whole set of adventures, or alter them, they’re a great illustration of organic storytelling. Of course, there are detailed maps to go along with it, as well as an enormous number of worlds and descriptions, more than I’ve ever seen in any RPG campaign. The artwork on the big map is frame-able, it’s that nice. If that was all you got, it’d be hugely valuable. But wait, there’s more. In two additional volumes in the slipcase set, you get more description of the campaign setting, and one of the most complete and interesting sourcebook-style treatise on the Aslan. This Traveller race finally gets its due. The culture and the ‘why’ behind the Aslan being in this region is explained. Whether allies or adversaries of the players, you’ll appreciate them that much more. The last volume deals with the unique ships and other important craft of the Trojan Reach. Some are in the Grand Scenario, and others are there for color and utility in any situations the players find themselves in. It’s a big library. Clearly, the authors intended this to allow for a ‘fresh start’ to any existing campaign, or starting a whole new campaign with new players. Whatever place your players are in, or level of experience, The Pirates of Drinax is well worth the expense. Recommended.Read full review
