  • Great Size for the Instrument Bore

I purchased this with a few assumptions. First, I thought being microfiber that it would be soft to the touch which it isn't but that isn't an issue. Further, it isn't the same vibrant red as pictured which also isn't an issue. It seems to do well at collecting the moisture from the bore of the bass clarinet which is it's primary job. There are a couple of concerns, however. First, the weight in the end of the swab is large. Large enough that it is very fiddly to get through the bell of the bass clarinet and gets caught in the crook of the bend without passing. It doesn't get stuck by any means but it doesn't drop down into the bore of the instrument every time. It tends to fall right back out the bell instead slowing down the process. Second, the swab is constructed to make it wider when pulled through by the way it is sewn, it kind of balloons. This is an excellent feature for the bore of the instrument but also prevents me from swabbing the neck of the instrument as I'm afraid it will catch on the register pip. I'm also doubtful that the actual weight would pass easily. I could either purchase another silk swab for a soprano clarinet to swab the neck or continue to wipe the ends and allow it to air dry. So if you are ok with carrying two swabs, this is excellent for the bore of the bass clarinet and works well for the mouthiece (some people don't swab the mouthpiece, I know). Since it isn't a one swab does all, I can't recommend purchasing.
