. Bulgakov was a Russian-language Ukrainian author who wrote about the tumultuous era of the early Soviet Union. The son of a prominent Kyiv theologian, Bulgakov became involved with the Revolutionaries and subtlely expressed his growing disaffection through satire. The White Guard described the civil war in Ukraine, in which Reds, Whites (pro-Czarist), and Ukrainian nationalists battled for supremacy. Unfortunately, that beautiful and troubled country is once again a battlefield. This novel describes the human condition under such trying circumstances.
