This is the one radio to own if you can only own one radio. It covers just about all Ham frequencies from dirt to light. Almost indestructible, easy to use, very good sound, and so small it's unreal. This is the one I take when I can only take one, especially if I have to carry it far. Plus, I can stay in touch on two meters, or work the world on HF. I have worked from Ohio into Paris, France on less than a watt on PSK and CW is just as good. Built in keyer, swr meter, power meter... it has it all... Just a great little rich

The only thing it is missing is decent DSP noise reduction. I think you can still add it, but being familiar with that board from other implementations, it is lacking so I wouldn't bother. Also, being that the radio is used by many in the mountains and hiking which are low noise environments anyway, I would just pass and live with the limitation. The battery last long on receive but of course transmit will kill it quickly. As far as power supplies, I use an old IBM 16V wall-wart type and put a couple of diodes on input to drop the 16V down to something close to 13.8V. I traveled with mine extensively and have had no issues since purchase maybe 10yrs or so ago, as much as 15yrs. Jerry

The FT817ND is an amazing piece of technology in a very small box. It probably shouldn't be the first choice for a home station setup due to its low QRP power but it's ideal for amateur operating portable from campsites or mountain tops with an external battery or solar power. It covers from 160 meters to 23 cm with all common amateur modes including cw, am, fm ssb and digital. It also has a general coverage receiver. It's not a high powered radio but with the proper antenna and propagation conditions it is capable of working amateurs around the world. There are menus to select the various modes that with some practice become second nature. The buttons and knobs are tiny but how else could you keep the physical size of the radio so small? If cw or digital modes are going to be used, it is strongly urged to install a narrow bandwidth crystal filter since the standard ssb bandwidth is too wide for most receiving conditions other than ssb. The filter made all the difference in the world for me using cw primarily. There are only a few other multi-mode QRP radios out there these days but none can compare with the same features and band coverage of the FT817ND and the Yaesu is priced considerably lower than the others. I've been enjoying using this new rig for portable ops and it's serving as my home station rig temporary full time since my "big rig" is out of service for repairs.Read full review
This is a very nice radio for HF to UHF. I have the older FT-817 as well and love using it I now have the newer one. I have use it on FM for local repeaters, contesting on SSB and as an IF rig with transsverter for VHF to the uW bands up to 10GHz.

I have used all methods of interfacing to work all forms of digital modes on HF and VHF. Been doing it since 1983. Of all of the interfaces this one is my favorite. Recently I built an SDR, the MCHF. I was more than impressed with the fact I could plug a single USB cable into the radio and have the best of all worlds in audio interfacing and CAT control. Everything down one data stream. Well, the SCU-17 gives a person the same ability for their Yaesu rig. This is a slick little unit. The only complaint I could come up with is that if you're not using the audio raw (you know, using it in the very mode I was just describing) and using the actual "key" line on the radio, the PTT light doesn't work. It's not tired to the SCU-17 when you are using CAT to control the rig. This is a small small complaint. For what this unit gives in return it's way worth the money. These interfaces are better than using the Signalink because that interfaces has a VOX circuit in it that generated a "key" command using the radio's key line. Now, if you're using a radio that isn't a Yaesu then the Signalink is the best option but for Yaesu, THIS one is.Read full review

There is not much I can say about a product that has been in production for some 15 years. It does it all in a total flexible very small package. This radio is known the world over and is a great value for the price.
