I bought the Lumia 820 as I needed a new phone and found I had grown quite fond of the live tiles and the "metro" interface from my win8 Lenovo X230T. I however didn't want to spend on a marquee device as it was more a trial of WP8 and at $160 for one in good (read excellent) condition and already unlocked it was a easy decision. I'm coming from an ICS T-Mo HD2 btw so i'm a little behind in hardware. The sharpest display I've ever seen on a phone first hand, expandable memory (64GB), built in 1GB of RAM (critically beats the lumia 720 there), changeable battery, changeable coloured covers with the built in buttons made buyers remorse a non-issue from the start. The interface is the best i've ever used (I've used iOS, android running sense and BB7) and its intuitive and seamless, it makes getting status updates from my different news, sports and humor apps easy. The blacks on the diplay are deep and make colours pop and seem more vibrant. Touch screen is responsive and accurate. My major issue is with the ring and message volume, even at max its quite low and the pre-loaded sounds are quite subtle if u work in a noisy environment you will easily find yourself missing calls and alerts - simple solution add a custom tone - except you can't add custom message (read sms, im or email) tones, mercifully you can add custom ringer tones though. I've had the criticism leveled that the app store is a barren wilderness devoid of hope, and that is not entirely true. Almost all the major apps I use/needed were all in the store and ready to install and in the few cases where I couldn't find a specific official app I either found a third party app running the service/pulling form the site or an as good competitor. It should however be noted that if ur after a niche app or something off the beaten path that may not be there.Read full review
For a mid-range smartphone it's tough to do better than the Nokia 820. If you like Windows phone (which I do) you won't find more features or a better value than the 820. Built in NFC, a nice 8MP camera and optional wireless Qi charging shell are great. SD card support means up to 72GB of storage. The only drawback is that design wise it's quite plain, boring even if not for the color options. However I find most mid-range phones have boring designs, so par for the course there (the HTC 8S looks better, but no wireless Qi charging option was a deal breaker). The screen is also not 720P, but still quote sharp with deep blacks and good color saturation. I thought I'd miss 720P but I actually don't with this phone.
I work in a tech support queue for a major Bluetooth headset manufacturer. Most of the calls I get regarding connection problems are Android phones. The second most problematic phone is iPhone. Everyone I speak to that has owned a Windows phone has no real complaint so I figured I would try one. I purchased this phone and I must say I love it. Wifi connection is a little week when updated to 8.1 Cyan but, still works reasonably well. Speech recognition function works well for web, email, text and calling contacts. The speech recognition works quite well via Bluetooth headset and, if you have a wideband headset, the phone with read your text messages and allow you to reply by simply waiting for the prompt tone and say "reply". It will then say "please state your message" and then read it back to confirm before you say "send". Apps that are available may be few for those who game or do other things on the phone but, since I do not, this phone is perfect for me. After all, it is a phone and that is what I use it for. This is larger and heavier than most but you get used to it. All in all, an excellent value!Read full review

These Lumia 820's are a really good deal. They can be upgraded to the latest 8.1 software release and have a very good Zeiss 8.9 mp camera that works much better than the reviews say, especially in low light. The 8gb of internal memory and Qualcomm Snapdragon processor give really good performance, not to mention 1gb of ram. I have had no problems at all using a 64gb memory card. If you can pick one of these up for under $60 -- go for it! Wireless charging is supported, but you will probably have to buy a new back cover, which is about $15 or so. Finally, there is the "clear black" display, which adds more contrast and better outdoor performance, and is unique to Nokia. The only bad things are the fact that it is not super thin and light, and although the 8.1 release has improved battery performance, you will have to get an extended life battery for $15 or so to get something that is close to and iPhone in battery performance. Cricket and MetroPCS are giving away Windows phones, but they do not have the Zeiss camera or wireless charging or 1gb of ram.Read full review
Bought the product as I've seen so many "discrete" advertisings in movies and tv-series that I needed to get one miself :) Sadly it feels very bulky in the hand, and battery is not very well fixed inside as it's shakes a little. Camera is very nice, the possibility to download filters is also ok. DIsplay looks very good but it's rather small compared to the whole case. Would recommend, if you pay under 200 USD for it.
First, a little background, for perspective: I'm an ex-iphone user, migrated from iphone to Android a few years ago, for the freedom and open-ness of the OS. I've really liked the Android OS and the phones I've bought along the way. A few months ago I bought a Lumia 521 with a new Metro PCS account. The Lumia 521 introduced me to Windows 8 Phone OS and I was amazed at how fluid, intuitive and FUN it is - so I decided to fork out for a premium Windows Phone ... which is what brought me to the Lumia 820. The NOKIA LUMIA 820 is SOLID. It's heavy in the hand and has a stable, durable feel to it. The display is vibrant and beautiful. Reviewers and "experts" out there on the web can say anything they want about resolution, rag on the pixel density, whatever - but this phone, in your hand is BEAUTIFUL. Colors pop, photos are crisp and videos look great! As was the case with my (brief) experience on the Lumia 521, this is quick, nimble, FAST. Every operation is there when called for, tasks present themselves immediately and close just as quickly. There's something about this Windows OS that must be much less resource-intensive, less hungry than other mobile OS's, because things just pop and fly all over the place. The Tiles ... live tiles, that represent what feels like a living, breathing OS Interface. You see the faces of your contacts and friends rotating in and out of the "People" tile ... Facebook posts of friends "pop up" in live time, as they are happening ... News updates circulate in a tile, the tile suddenly flips over to reveal another breaking headline ... the tile from your Songza app suddenly flips over to say "It is Friday Night" (or late Saturday morning, etc.) ... the Photos tile rotates through your albums, scrolling slowly and continuously ... nothing stands still, this tiled-interface is alive! More on Tiles ... you can size and re-size your tiles, according to taste; regular (square), large (rectangle that covers width of the screen) or small (one quarter size of regular). You can even Pin your favorite websites to the screen, each in a tile of it's own. I've got four favorite Playlists (from Nokia Music) pinned to my screen, each re-sized to small, and they form a little music "block", the size of a regular tile! The Lumia 820 has NFC capability and Wireless Charging - something I didn't think I'd ever need or use, but I did fork out for the charging plate and it's been a very nice bonus. I've already grown lazy, with the ability to simply place the phone on it's back for a charge ... no plugs, cables or hassles. CUSTOMIZATION! Unlike other phones in the Lumia lineup, this one has interchangeable back plates. Once in place, it looks like a solid piece of polycarbonate. You can make this a Cyan phone, a bright Red phone, Yellow, White or Black, simply by putting a different (removable) back plate on it. You can order these with or without NFC and Wireless Charging capability. This phone was black when I bought it, I've since changed it to Cyan (and have other colors on order). Is the 920 a better phone? How about the 928? Well, the specs are better on those phones, but for me, this is the sweet spot. It's smaller than the 920, but with the same screen size, and (again), with the joy of body / color customization. Processing speed? System RAM? What are those??? What do I care? When a phone is as fast, fluid, stable and zippy as this is, who cares? When you get a phone that performs as beautifully as this, you can forgRead full review
I upgraded from a Lumia 710 [W7.5] and it was a tough choice between the 820 or a 920. My daughter has a 920 and it looked like it was way too big for me to carry around, plus it's more money. I also considered the 520, but settled in on the 820, which is actually just about as big as the 920 anyway. Of course I love the bigger screen, coming from a 710. Much easier to type now. Love tile sizing. Love everything about windows phone- most especially voice texting. That has impoved with WP8 for sure. I seriously considered an android as well, but in the end windows phone is just too slick to be denied. And since it has all the apps I need- some which I really needed hence the upgrade- I'm very impressed and happy with the 810. It's an excellent, slim, and lightweight phone for a guy on the move who just needs to slip the thing in a front pocket and go. I would suggest at the very least a screen protector for it. They can be had specifically for the 810 on the cheap. Fits and works great. But I'm getting a back and face plate kit to really keep it protected. For phone calls, texting, awesome blue tooth speach paired with car navi [call AND text!], and multi media connectivity, the 810 delivers. Notice I didn't mention the camera? At 50 years old, the camera isn't what concerns me most. Kids live for the cameras- adults need the rest. But I'll add- excellent camera too!Read full review
Used digital cameras for last ten years and this has great pic colors. With digital interpretation the final print is great for quick home/vacation use. My wife uses Chinese QQ to voice talk with little sister in China - very cute ! I connect via Internet without any AT&T or other contracts ,,, being poor Alabama man - don't have the $60 per month. This Nokia 820 has little faster cpu than 635 and operates smooth with finger movement . Battery will go weak in several hours , my wife will push it till battery can hardly stand up then she plugs in a simple 2600 mAH battery pack and it's good to go another several hours. Weight is fine and seems well built. The added memory TF card,up to 32 GB, is very handy due to ,,, I will keep separate cards for : vacations, teaching subjects and wife takes 100's of pics of her face !! SO - great quality for price -- Apple can keep their cells ,, this Nokia is all I can handle. EBay Taylorwireless is a great shipper !! Will buy more 820's for family in USA and China ,, the GSM tec should take a SIM card OK in China - but not tested yet ..you can buy electronics cheaper in USA than in China . Also wife watches Chinese movies streams and all the flowers, landscapes and ancient dresses -- all colors are great. Easy to use with pillow at head and 820 in fingers,, SO - it's said if wife is happy the whole world is happy so this 820 will work for me for several years . Tom in AlabamaRead full review
I love this phone. Upgraded from the smaller 520 but this has better battery & flash! The Windows OS is easy to use. Swipe movement is smooth and the colors vibrant. Got it at a "steal". A+++++

So far the best smart phone I have bought in many years, easy to use, replaceable battery, you can add memory, great battery life. You can't go wrong. I have had iPhones, Samsung's, (Focus, Focus S, HTC's Titan, Titan II, Thunderbolt). None of them hold a candle to this phone.
