En la III etapa de la Escuela Básica, desarrollar la comprensión lectora de textos literarios es un objetivo fundamental e indispensable. Sin embargo, hemos observado, tanto en los programas oficiales vigentes como en los textos utilizados para el área de Lengua y Literatura, particularmente en Noveno Grado, que se da mayor énfasis e importancia a los contenidos sobre gramática, comunicación y lenguaje, que a la lectura y al proceso de la comprensión lectora. En este trabajo se analizan diversas perspectivas y tendencias sobre la didáctica de la lengua y la literatura, la lingüística textual, la comprensión lectora y las habilidades inherentes a ella tales como la interpretación, valoración y manejo del lenguaje literario, además de proponer, a través de un manual de lecturas y actividades destinado al noveno grado de educación básica, el desarrollo de la comprensión lectora a través de textos literarios.
