I first became aware of Gil Schafer in Russell Versaci's book 'Creating a New Old House' which was my "Bible" when rehabbing and adding on to a stone house in the mid Atlantic. I fell in love with Mr. Schafer's new home in the Hudson Valley which was featured in the book. I've always hoped I might be able to build a new old house and my husband and and I are considering just that so I looked up Mr. Schafer's work and found this book. It covers his Hudson Valley home in much more depth--drool--and other homes he has worked on for clients. He is clearly one of the best as evidenced by those he has worked with. The pictures and landscape plans are wonderfully helpful. The forward of the book is by Bunny Williams which speaks volumes. If you are considering a build or are remodeling an old home this could be a valuable resource. I know that I often held books up to weary carpenters to show them exactly what I wanted. If you don't you will get the boring cookie cutter look that has spread across the landscape of America. Stand firm and make your contractor build the details the way you want them. It doesn't even have to cost more if you tell them from the beginning. Gil Schafer is a master and this book beautifully illustrates his craft.Read full review
