The Platium model has a faster processor than the 12C. It is fully programmable with many programs available in the downloadable users guide (pdf). If one enters a several digit number and the last digit is incorrect, simply press the G- keys and the last digit is erased. The 12C will erase the entire number. The 12C Platinum is a powerful well-built calculator and can operate in algebraic or RPN modes. Unless you are a collector, there is no reason to buy a standard 12C.

I used to love the HP12C, and still do, BUT they have moved to cheaper production and the upshot is that the labeling of the functions ABOVE the keys is now in red instead of yellow/gold, so they are VERY HARD TO SEE. Especially if you are over 45, when the eyes don't work the same way, and red is a terrible choice. If you can find an older model that has these function keys in gold, you will have a more pleasant user experience.

I am mentoring a grad student in a corporate finance class. When I pulled out my calculator to double-check an Excel calculation (a good habit, BTW), she jokingly exclaimed, “Wow, talk about a 70s throwback.” Well, it looks old, but it’s brand new. By the time our session ended, she had talked me into lending it to her while she buys one for herself. The only caveat: the Platinum version can change entry modes from RPN (reverse Polish notation) to ALG (algebraic) with a function key combination. Shouldn’t really be a problem; a single keystroke won’t change your horses in midstream but it can be annoying if you try for a neighboring function while you are multitasking or “touch-typing” with fat fingers.

This is a very good teaching tool for learning Accounting/Finance. The calculator appears to be of very good build quality with very good key feedback. Excellent battery life. The newer 12c uses 2 CR2032 batteries vs the older, gold 12c which uses 3 LR44 batteries. Comes with a digital Quick Start and User manual on CD that can be printed out, but the manuals are over 270 pages. The calculator also came with a nice leather case with a built-in business card pocket. The 12c business and financial calculators are capable of so much, it would take me a semester of college to master its features and programming. The calculator keypad is laid out in landscape versus the traditional portrait style. A new issue of the iconic and classic HP Voyager series 11c, 12c, 15c, 16c, and the HP 71b, this calculator will give years of good, reliable performance to anyone learning or working in Real Estate, Banking, and Accounting. I'm very satisfied with this purchase. Read full review

I purchased two of these Platinum 25th Anniversary HP12C calculators, one for myself and one for my granddaughter. We both love them and find them easy to use. It’s also a nice feature that you are able to switch from RPN format to an alternate one.

Great calculator with a great "retro" look that never goes out of style. I would prefer if it didn't have an algebraic mode. No reason to even not use RPN. Compared to my older HP 12c from the 1980s, this new one feels lighter and the buttons have a crisper feel to them. This newer model uses CR2032 batteries instead of those LR44 button batteries, so we'll see what the battery life is like.

Got my first one in 1982. Still have it. Rubber legs went in 1990. Metal back plate is worn to bare metal. Numbers barely visible. But the batteries last forever and the thing works as well today as when I bought it. I've been buying and selling apartment buildings since 1974 and this calculator has made me millions of dollars. There are more modern ones, fancier ones, that do a lot of stuff, but I have a computer for that. The 12C is more powerful than I've ever needed. I bought two backups "just in case" more than 10 years ago, but my original 12C is still running perfectly. My kids grew up along with my 12C and both are now in real estate investment. Both use a 12C. When you deal with professionals and they whip out a 12C, there is an instant bonding. You KNOW those guys know what they are doing. Most of them have a story connected to their 12C. I bought a vintage 1987 model on ebay for my nephew just breaking into the business. It is like a "rite of passage" in our family to get a 12C. It means you've "arrived".Read full review

The HP12C financial calculator has been in production for over 40 years! The landscape format and extraordinary battery life. The original units, built in the USA have great keyboards and superior LCD displays. While the 1980s units are considerably slower than the more recent units, the slower compute time isn't a major problem. The original HP12C uses RPN logic instead of Algebraic logic and a small investment of time learning RPN will be rewarded in fewer keystrokes and errors. I think the HP12C is an outstanding calculator and it's 40 plus years of production shows others agree.
