Although I had seen pieces of "Call the Midwife" on PBS, I just recently "discovered" this series and spent a week catching up on all the episodes - which then led me to read the books! I love this series! It gives wonderful detail into the intimate lives of those who lived in London's East End during the 1950's, showing the terrible struggles but always full of hope. Although 65 years later, one can still relate to stories of friendships, sorrows & dreams. Excellent series. Kudos to great writers, producers, actors!
It's based on fact. It's based on real peoe that lived without cars or phones. Very touching. Family problems, sometimes abuse and alcohol problems. Delivery drama and problems. Interesting ways they dealt with issues for that time. Young nurses and their love lives as well as humanity. Have a Kleenex handy. Touching. Good drama. One of the nuns is so funny talking about weird things all the time. I think she gets alzheimers. Like real life as it's based on real life.

I've seen seasons 1 through 8 on DVD. It's an eye-opener and highly entertaining. Trixie is my favorite. She can't get any cuter. Since I'm an American, I found it hard to understand what was said at times, but I was able to get the gist of it. Also found it to be funny at times. Fred was especially funny, especially when he had a ton of sand delivered for a small sandbox. Phyllis' face was priceless when she discovered the sand blocking her Morris Minor. This series portrays a time before abortions were legalized. The back alley abortions will break your heart. Appreciate the medical research done in order to be correct as far as medical discoveries and history. The writing is superb and I'll recommend this series to all of my American and British friends who haven't yet had the pleasure.Read full review

Wonderful series with strong, intelligent ,caring female roles. Based on a real group of nuns and midwifes ,some of whom are still alive. Deals with the issues of the times in an interesting view of one of the nurses. Each season gets better.

i luv this show, just started watching DVD. It is funny, sad & shows u another era of life. Nothing bad can be said about it. as to comparing there is no other show like it,it seem lately that the UK can produce much better tv shows, of late. on BBC they had Copper, which was a good interesting show also with a look at history. And in US they are noted for cancelling go show al leaving junk on.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND the entire collection.... This is just as engaging as Downtown Abbey, Upstairs/Downstairs and the Gilmore Girls. The price for this type of entertainment can't be beat!

From the very first episode, I was hooked!! I wanted to know these character's and because its a true story, made it more intriguing. Sister Monica Joan is a favorite and Sister Julienne. Chummy also is quite funny. I just love them all. You won't be sorry purchasing these videos. Be sure to get them all 1-5. Hanging on to see series 6.

Series based on the memoirs of a midwife. If you enjoy James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small, you may like this series as well.

I love this series. But the first three are the only "based on fact" episodes. The others have been invented. However, they are good too.
