The author states in the preface that 'The Question Of Lordship Salvation'(or the question could be phrased:What is the gospel? or What is saving faith?)is the most serious question that faces the Church today.I think that was true when the book was first published in 1988 and over 20 years later it is still the case. Just as false teaching on justification by faith alone can deceive many to their eternal ruin, errant teaching on the nature of saving faith can be just as lethal. Is saving faith just an assent to the truth about who Jesus is and what he has done to save sinners.John MacArthur says no and gives weighty biblical evidence to support his conviction. In chapter fifteen 'The Call To Repentance' MacArthur notes that some dispensationalists in the early part of the 20th century were teaching that repentance was for another age or dispensation. The Ryrie study Bible contends that repentance is a false addition to faith. Pastor MacArthurs response to these claims can be found in part on p.167 "Repentance has always been the foundation of the Biblical call to salvation. ...No evangelism that omits the message of repentance can properly be called the gospel, for sinners cannot come to Christ apart from a radical change of heart, mind and will."He cites Acts 2:38 where Peter preached 'Repent and be baptized...' and three thousand souls were saved. In chapter sixteen 'The Nature Of True Saving Faith' Mr.MacArthur asserts that faith (true Biblical faith)and obedience are inseperable. The Bible does not teach nor does MacArthur suggest that Christians are saved by their obedience but "Obedience is the inevitable manifestation of true faith."J.I.Packer in the forward gives a warning not to seperate what God has joined and the Word of God clearly teaches that Christ is the Prophet,Priest and King(there is the Lordship, the obedience and the submission to God's will))of His people. Those who deny 'Lordship Salvation' are seperating Christs rule over His followers from His prophetic(teaching) and priestly(sacrificial)functions. There are numerous ways to Biblically support the 'Lordship teaching'.Another way that Pastor MacArthur does is in Chapter 19 'The Cost Of Discipleship'.Here the author addresses what it means to be a disciple of Christ and what it costs as well. All Christians are disciples. In the great commision the Church is to go into all the world and make disciples..What are those disciples to be taught?'To observe all that Christ has commanded'.What is the cost of discipleship? p.202"Luke 9:23 ...If anyone wishes to come after me,let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow me. ...The life of a disciple invites persecution and therefore must be a life of daily self denial." The Gospel According to Jesus clearly expounds 'the Biblical and historical gospel',the true nature of saving faith, the necessity of repentance, the significance of obedience and commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ. There have been other very helpful books published in the last 20 years :A Laymans Guide To The Lordship Controversy by Richard Belcher,Lord and Christ by Ernest Reisinger and Must Jesus Be Lord To Be Saviour by William Webster. The importance and relevance of John MacArthurs masterful apologetic on 'Lordship Salvation'remains undiminished.Read full review
This is the book that opened my eyes to the error of the Once Saved Always Saved teaching and caused me to look to the Anabaptist way of seeing things, namely the Amish and Mennonites since they are the only ones still teaching Lordship Salvation. "Without holiness no one will see the Lord". The fact that the Church is so worldly and liberal and they teach that since the Atonement covers all your sins you can act however you please and that's just not right teaching. It's called Antinomianism and it has taken over Christianity. This is a life-changing book. It opened my eyes.

This book was initially written for seminary students, so it may seem a little high brow to some. However it's worth sticking with it. This is by far the best book I've ever read about sanctification and justification, grace and works. MacArthur's research is rock solid, and well worth the in-depth study. This a fantastic book for any Christian who is seeking to delve into a deeper understanding of the faith and the nature of God. For anyone who cannot wrap his/her head around the wording, MacArthur also wrote "The Gospel According to the Apostles" which is similar, but easier to read.
This book is a well written explanation of the concept of "Lordship Salvation." I found it very helpful. If you want to know what Jesus says about what it is to be a Christian, this is a book to add to your library. Dr. MacArthur does of good job of pointing to the teaching of Jesus in the Bible to explain why a true believer will be known by their fruit. Not only did I get a better understanding of this concept from reading this book, but also now I can explain it better to others.
As a youth pastor that embraces water/spirit baptism, I often struggled with the reality that youth tend to abandon their spiritual obligations in their teenage years. This book captures and explains a beautiful message; that our Lord is our Savior AND Lord. Many times, we view Christ as Savior only but fail to grasp making Him Lord of our lives. It has truly been a blessing in understanding our biblical relationship of having Christ as our Lord, not only our Savior.
Awesome book!

A great mirrow to look into. The authur is very versed in the Bible and able to explain things. In the first chapter he explains time periods which a novice may have to skip over that page. Great book!
This book is vital to understanding salvation. Jesus expects us to follow Him; not just believe in Him. Really opens your eyes to what Jesus truly taught about salvation. Recommended for everyone!
