Kit Carson became the mountain man he had dreamed of becoming, as he made his first beaver trapping expedition through Show Low and down into the Salt River Canyon. The great Apache warrior, Cochise, sought out the founder of Fort Apache, Major Green, for peace talks. Archeologist Adolf Bandelier studied the ruins of a village near Show Low Creek that was abandoned in 1200, finding pieces of exceptional pottery designed by skilled craftsmen. The area was one of the Arizona destinations for the famous and historical Mormon movement into the state. The greatest of Indian fighters, General George Crook, recruited Apache scouts whose skills proved invaluable in the military's winning of the Apache Wars. This book describes the history of the times followed by a first person account of the dreams of Show Low's visitors and inhabitants. Within these accounts are vivid descriptions of the culture at the time and the "way it was" as well as personal commentary on the hopes, dreams and heartbreak of those who passed through or settled in Show Low. The historical stories of Show Low are some of the best in the west and the reader will be introduced to a cast of characters that made Arizona the great place it has become!
