A well written unbiased biography of an important civil war leader. Many consider him one of the 4 or 5 most effective generals in either side's army. The author carefully details the good and bad traits of the man and the impact he had on the war in the west.
I bought this book to compare it with Life of General Nathan Bedford Forrest by John A. Wyeth. I found it's research a little wanting as compared to the other, as he didn't cover much original information, and he seemed more concerned at times to disparage the other. Though the contemporary writing style was easier to read most of the times, I still prefer Wyeth's book as he had more access to the original partcipants.
A great historical read. Hard to put down. Highly recommended.

This is a most excellent book, describing the details of a true southern patriot, and perhaps one of the most brilliant and hard-fighting generals the south had. Excellent maps and details regarding the battles fought by Forrest, and the stories are so interesting and incredible that you will not want to put the book down. 500 star rating.
