    A Mediocre Film at Best

What promised to be an interesting "western" turned out being mostly middle-of-the-road mediocrity. Richard Boone portrays a tough-as-nails commandant of a Western outpost for the U.S. Army in the 1880s. He's been assigned a new adjutant (played by George Hamilton) who he immediately dislikes--and sets out to show how much he does dislike him. The storyline of this film, then, could have been set in any time period in any location--and played out pretty much the same--older man in a position of power feeling challenged by a younger man sent in as a future replacement. This was definitely NOT Richard Boone's best film. George Hamilton was--well, George Hamilton. He could have been playing Dopey in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and still been the same ho-hum actor. The only really redeeming quality of the film was the brilliant color and spectacular expanses of the American Southwest that often filled the screen. Beyond that it was a waste of time in my opinion.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix, angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection
