Very disappointing-essentially for the price I paid. I love Mason as an actor, but this movie was a waste. The accent/dialogue was hard to hear/follow.

This is a feeble dramatisation of John le Carré's first book, Call For the Dead. It was made before le Carré became world-famous, before The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and long before le Carré himself became the oracle of British and American espionage. This version does no justice to his most loved character George Smiley; James Mason is a most improbable choice to play the part. For le Carré addicts this is a film that should be seen, if only to put the early reception of his work in context. As a film and as a version of Call for the Dead it is, sadly, a dismal failure.
