Not only the greatest war film ever, but my personal favorite film of all time. And there isn't much else to say that others haven't covered about the movie itself. But I will say that as a vet of both Iraq and A-stan, that the firefight never felt this real in any other movie. And yet they take a much deserved back seat to the main storyline. While not completely obvious to me, something Malick does in directing those points of the film are seriously visceral to me. He captures just how terrifying it can be when you are forced to stop and make a decision in the middle of the all encompassing madness that is a firefight. Something that typically swallows every sense of your being to a point that you enter a 'zone' and the typical decision making process in everyday life doesn't play a role. When you are forced to stop, and are brought back to earth as a result, there is a shock down your spine when the reality of the situation hits home. He also captures the fog of war perfectly. The movie was all that but my gripe is you can get the DVD for four dollars but if you want Blu-ray you pay fourteen or more. The Blu-ray is obviously better and I bought the single disc, but it wasn't three times better in my view. I know I didn't have to buy it but I wanted the best available version and after watching it I was kinda like it really wasn't worth it.

I am not a fan of the director’s work but decided to give the film a chance. Once again, his excesses marred what could have been a terrific film. It went on an hour longer than it should have missing several chances to end on a good note. If Malik had not spun off in too many directions and ended the movie sooner, I would have raved about it instead of hoping it would finally come to an end.
