First off, one needs to be aware that this item only works with the original HP Photo and Imaging software that comes with the Scanjet 4600 series scanners. This software works with Windows XP or earlier. It does NOT work with Windows 7, Vista, 8, 8.1 or 10. I solved this problem by downloading Microsoft's Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode software which allows XP to run on my Windows 7 Professional PC. You use Virtual PC to open a window which runs a full version of Windows XP SP3 and then you can install the HP Photo and Imaging software there. The Slide/Negative scanner plugs into your Scanjet 4600 panel (socket is right next to the front panel push buttons) and sits in two guide holes on the glass side of the scanner surface. The HP software takes care of all settings from there. I've tried both 35mm slide and color negatives and the software does a good job of color rendition, even with negatives. All and all it's a nice accessory if you have need for transparency or negative scanning. If not, the scanner itself works just fine with the basic Windows 7 or 10 driver built into those operating systems
