for real high intensity stereo microscope work you can't beat them. the bulbs burn out more frequently(and they are not cheap to replace) but you can extend their life by making sure that you dim the light all the way down before turning light on and then slowly bring light intensity up/ or i have seen some people modify then on a dimmer switch type system were the bulb never goes completely off and it lasts for a looong time.also they are more noisy. LED lights dont seem at this point have as much light intensity. yes they are quiet and they will last forever but when your doing photo work and got the magnification cranked up i think they are better. they are expensive so try to find a good used one for a lot less.
