I owned one of the original design Magnum 350 filters for years back in the '90s, and when I pulled it out of a 10-year storage, it worked perfectly for years. It would probably still be working if it hadn't gotten burned up when my ex-wife set my house on fire! I recently bought two more Magnum 350's, a standard and a "Pro", for use when I set my 55-gallon tanks up again. The newer design isn't much different, just a change from a flat, horizontal magnetic drive to a thin, vertical one like all filters now have, but aside from the drive housing and matching motor connection, everything else is exactly the same and swap-able. Why mess with perfection? I particularly like the fact that you can easily see when the filter needs cleaning, unlike most other canister filters, and with the quick-connect valves, it's easy to shut it down and take the canister to the sink for cleaning before opening it up and spilling it everywhere. The valves can also be used to control the flow rate of the filter, in case you need less current, so, technically you could even use it for smaller aquariums (if you needed to). The Magnum 350 also converts easily to a water polishing micron filter by simply changing the filter medium (diatomaceous earth can be added to the micron filter cartridge for increased micron filtration, like for filtering out Ick). The only mechanical maintenance the filter usually needs is replacing the lid seal (very rarely) and the valve seals (now and then, depending on how often you use the valves and if you get grit in them). And if you need parts, they are readily available, not too expensive, and easy to change out. You can't go wrong with a Magnum 350!Read full review

I love this filter. I had one for about 8 years and sold it looking for better service from one of the newer design filters. Boy was I sorry. The new filter ran for 2 weeks and the water was still cloudy. I purchased this filter and after installing it my tank was clear in 2 days. I don't know why Marineland discontinued this model. It is the best out there.
