Works fine, but you have to fiddle with each slide
I use it with an M42 Takumar macro lens. This is the older, 1:1 version. As this lens has 49mm threads, it is necessary to use a 49mm to 52mm step up ring, which will be an extra purchase (under $5). The Takumar lens is mounted onto a Ricoh GXR M mount module with an M42 to M mount adapter. As I have other M42 lenses that I use on this module, there was no extra expense for the adapter. With this setup, copying slides is very easy, except that this copier has just enough play in it that you must tweak the carrier a little bit after it is slid into place for copying. Not much, but sometimes the slide carrier sits in there a little kittywompus, which means you have to manuallly tweak the carrier a bit so that the slide image is level again. If I was doing hundreds of slides at a sitting, this might be annoying, but normally I only copy a box or two of slides at a time, then do my post processing. One more piece of advice: my camera module is 12 megapixels. While it is pretty good, I think that having a few more megapixels would improve the resolution a bit more. As it is, I sharpen a little in post processing, so I get by just fine. The GXR M module uses an APS-C sensor, in case you are wondering about that. The module also has focus peaking, so that seems to make the focusing process quite easy as well. Well, that’s my take on it. Would I buy one again? Sure, the price on mine was $22 shippep, so not really much to complain about in that regard. There ar other similar slide copiers out there, and I would say that if you can find one where the fiddly orientation adjustment didn’t need to be made, go for that one provided it isn’t a whole lot more expensive. I understand that Nikon ES-1 is pretty good in not requiring much if any readjustment, but it is double the price, too.
