Too often, we study World War II as an event for generals and soldiers while on fields of battle-when, in fact, the war was waged in the lives of hundreds of millions of soldiers and civilians in and out of combat. Professor Thomas Childers uses the dual perspective of military and social history to widen our view on this war. The result is a presentation that never lets you forget what World War II meant to the people of its own time, for whom the happenings of the war were not history, but current events. Professor Childers shows you clearly the reality of the war not only as the commanders saw it on their operations maps, but as those fighting it on the land, at sea, and in the air experienced it. And as it was brought home to those not in uniform as well-those working in aircraft factories back in the United States, huddled in bomb shelters during the London Blitz, or fearfully looking skyward as the drone of bombers approached Cologne or Essen or Bremen. This course examines the greatest conflict in human history, often called the "last great war." Between 1937 and 1945 approximately 55 million people perished in this series of interrelated conflicts. No continent was left untouched, no ocean or sea unaffected. The war: led to the eclipse of Europe and the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as global superpowers ushered in the atomic age and produced, in Auschwitz and elsewhere, the most grisly crimes ever committed in the long course of Western civilization led to national liberation from Europe's colonial empires around the world.
