Davey Johnson tells of his journey as a manager with occasional incidents from his playing days. He experiences success with the Miami Amigos before going on to success with the Mets (the Jackson, Mississippi team). After a year as a roving instructor, he succeeds in AAA baseball with Tidewater. He takes the New York Mets job after the 1983 season, then spends the next two seasons rebuilding the team. The reader gets a great experience of being a big league manager and its peaks and valleys. He tells mostly of the 1985 season, concluding with the heartbreaking pennant elimination by the Cardinals. He instills the drive and motivation into the team to win it all the next season.
