Although adult fans of the classic Nancy Drew series may find this book a bit short, and may not like all the texting and email references, CURSE OF THE ARCTIC STAR is not cringe-worthy. Unlike the Nancy Drew of the recently-cancelled Girl Detective series, the Nancy in this novel is not an absent-minded slob whose skills are surpassed by those of Bess and George. Although the books are in first person (like Girl Detective), the heroine of the Nancy Drew Diaries is a competent detective who pursues her mysteries carefully and intelligently. Bess and George, too, are recognizable to Classic Nancy fans. Bess, while more interested in fashion and boys than in mysteries, is neither timid nor silly. George is very boyish, speaks bluntly, and there is a funny scene where Bess forces her to wear a dress. In fact, the whole book is humorous without being a parody. As for the texting and email --- face it, adult fans, these books are written for twelve-year-olds, and they'd find it strange if the characters didn't text. CURSE of THE ARCTIC STAR has its share of old-fashioned perils, too: a tarantula on the buffet table, a fake dead body in the swimming pool, Nancy getting pushed off a boardwalk into the water. No murder, no gore, no cuss words or crude language, and no sex. The challenge with any Nancy Drew revival series is making it interesting for modern preteens without offending their parents or angering Nancy's legions of adult fans. In my opinion, the Nancy Drew Diaries have finally gotten it right.Read full review
