  • Admiration, Respect, Creativity ...a Mutual Alliance Between Two Artists Ahead of Their Time

Emilie Floge and Gustav Klimt had an unusual relationship. They lived separately yet had a dear friendship based on kindred interests. She was a fashion designer and he was an artist. He designed many of her clothes that were flowing and relaxing to look at and wear. He recommended his clients to Emily and her sisters' dress shop where they had about 50 women sewing the fashionable clothes. Sadly, once the second world war began she and her sisters had to abandon their very successful shop in order to escape from Austria with their lives. Klimt had several illegitimate children with his clients (from 6 to 15,it is reported) and he supported not only them with his work but also paid for everything the mothers and children needed. They never had to work with his generous support. He loved the aesthetic beauty of women as well as the sensual side. Poor Emilie had to be quiet about his affairs, resulting in a nervous condition( which left her after Klimt died )or she could have lost her best friend, Klimt. (He never married, nor did she -even after his death. His last words were to say "Send for Emilie.")They went to the opera together and were inseparable in many things, including vacations at Attersee which was where Emilie's family had a vacation home. I could go on and on about these two and the respect they had for each other as mutual artists in their own way, but I do not want to give away any more info to take away from the adventure of their relationship, which was true love that did not seem to involve the physical act but their mutual interests as artistic creators.
