Once you see the trilogy in the extended form there is no reason to ever watch them in the theatrical run ever again, at least if you are a fan of them. They're longer, sure, but they expand the characters and world so much more than the original cuts did. These movies have a Star Wars dilemma though, the action is fantastic, but it's a slower paced type than the Hobbit (prequels) so it looks weird going from one to the other. This, like Star Wars, is the superior trilogy in the Tolkein-verse.
