SynopsisPart the diary of Noah Blake, who was 15 in 1805, and part a re-creation of the life that a boy in his circumstances would have lived, this book is a loving tribute to a vanished way of life. Profusely illustrated, it will give its readers a sense of participation in the past that is all too rare in conventional histories.

I loved this book! Take a trip back to the early 19th century as seen through the eyes of a young adolescent boy as he helps his parents transform their homestead from basic survivability to a thriving farm complete with mill and blacksmith shop. The author, a collector of period artifacts, explains how tools and buildings were designed and created, complete with drawing, and also explains how customs and holidays have changed over the years. I was impressed with the ingenuity and common sense that was evident in every aspect of their lives. This is a wonderful book for anyone wanting to gain an appreciation for where we've come from and how we got here.

  • Short but filled with a homespun view.

Diary of an early American Boy is a fantastic and realistic peek at life in the start of 1805 and continues for nearly 15 years. Anyone interested in early American life from a boy's eyes and applied muscle would enjoy this book. My only regret I wish it was longer.
