I always like the Studio Ghibli movies. Totoro is my favorite. This one is very nice. It's more of a "slice of life" movie in the same vein as Up on Poppy Hill. With the exception of maybe the cat, there are no fantastical elements such as in the films like Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, Kikki's Delivery Service, etc. It's a beautiful film. I would consider it appropriate for kids though it may not hold the interest of the younger ones. It's mostly characters interacting and developing. Nothing blows up.
This movie is a lot different from some of Ghibli's other films. Unlike the more fantasy like settings, this movie takes place in a Japanese middle school and resolves around a girl who is discovering herself and is aspiring to become a writer. There are lot of interesting themes in this movie, and I definitely think it's well worth watching for Ghibli fans!
