My aunt is in terminal stages of colon cancer, and had started getting to the point of forgetting to pay bills, take her pills, etc. In thinking she may have had a slight stroke, her oncologist set up test and referred her to a physcotherapist for other testing. It all turned out to be 'frontal lobe demntia', beginnings of Dementia/Altzheimers disease. There was additional testing being done and I had already taken over the tasks she had, paying bills, getting someone in to help more with her daily needs, and eventually moving her in with another relative, and getting care sent to that home during the day. Her doctor then set up Hospice to help in these last stages of cancer. They deal with the cancer though, and not the dementia. On a 2nd follow up with the physcotherapist, she recommended this book. I read some reviews on it, and proceeded to get it from Ebay. While it is years old, and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of newer, added information editions, this book is wonderful. It deals with all stages of a family member's deteriation, and how to help during the progression. I'm lending it to others in family dealing with this as well. I do wish I had known about it earlier, and maybe had a chance for my aunt to read it before she went down hill even more, but on the other hand, she is probably not the kind that could handle that. I would recommend this book to anyone dealing with or anticipating this disease in their family. It can be scary, but is certainly an eye opener. In our case, it looks like the Altzheimers is going to get her before the cancer finishes her off, and I think that is worse.Read full review
our doctor recommended this book when my elderly parents started showing signs of dementia. my son, who is their caretaker, read it immediately. he found it to be of great help in teaching him ways to discuss things with my parents. it gave ideas how to deal with situations and how to understand the reason they respond the way they do. i also found it a great help in how i now would have to communicate with my parents because their thinking has changed. i would highly recommend this book to others who are facing similar problems or just want to understand this growing need in our nation.
I purchased this book because my mother has dementia and the book was recommended by a social worker for me to read. It is very informative about this terrible disease. I can only read a chapter at a time as it is very upsetting to me to realize the path my mother will tread. However I am hoping it will help me deal with my mother's rages and also help me deal with her frustration. I would definitely recommend this book to others who have family members with this disease. I sincerely hope a cure is found.
This is a must-read for anyone caring for a person with Alzheimer's Disease, a task which can quickly become overwhelming as you watch someone you love slip away by inches. I bought this to give to a dear friend in her 60's whose husband has been diagnosed with early Alzheimers and is on medication but already has significant problems with memory and behavior. I would recommend it without question to anyone in a caregiving role, especially caring for someone else with Alzheimer's but also for anyone who is giving care on a long-term basis to another person, particularly a family member.
This is a must-read book for anyone involved in the care of dementia patients. It is well written with many examples that lead the reader to a better understanding of how this disease affects our loved ones.

I purchased this book on the advise of a alzheimer's support group coordinator. This book has been very informative and helpful to me in dealing with caring for a loved one that has been diagnosed with alzheimer's. The book helps you cope with what is going on around you and has very good advise on things that you need to deal with as the disease progresses.
I bought several of these books because a family member was diagnosed with several illnesses that have to do with Parkensons, Alzheimers, Demincia etc.. I bought one for everyone in the family and I will continue to give these books to anyone facing the same issues included in this book. It was highly recommended to me by a Doctor and I highly recommend it to others!!
