Based on the novel by Julian Barnes, Metroland tells the story of Chris (Bale), a young man in 1970s London who comes to question his domestic life and values when an old free-spirited friend, Toni, turns up unexpectedly. Spending time with Toni calls up all sorts of old memories of Chris' more carefree days in the 60s, including a collegiate spell in Paris where he had an affair with a young French woman (shown in extended flashback). All of this makes him question whether he has chosen too safe a path by settling down in the suburbs with his wife Marion (Watson).

Veddy British!
A young, unrecognizable Christian Bale and also a quite young Emily Watson, do a very fine job in this dark comedy (not a jokey comedy, but an ironic one!) about a marriage in trouble in middle-class England of the eighties--Many of the cultural references and much of the social history which is the context for this, might be missed by Americans, especially young Americans--Veddy British!--If that's your cup of tea then you will like this.
